Hylton Red House was a comprehensive secondary school for ages 11–16 located in Red House, Sunderland, England. As of 2005 it had 736 students, a fall of 25% since 2000.〔(Ofsted report ) (2005)〕〔(School with call centre training site in classroom criticised for lowering pupils' expectations ) ''Education Guardian'', July 23, 2007〕 In July 2009, the school closed in preparation for the transition of its staff and students to the newly built Red House Academy - an Academy funded by the Leighton Group, hoping to provide a "balanced curriculum", allowing its students to "pursue their own ambitions" in "state-of-the-art buildings". The principal will be Dr. Thérèse Quincey, who was the headteacher of Hylton Red House School for its final years, under whose leadership the school was removed from special measures by Ofsted and given grades satisfactory to good. ==Call centre training== In 2007 the school attracted some controversy regarding a training programme for call centre operators. The programme was set up in conjunction with an energy company (EDF Energy) which has a call centre in the area. For pupils, successful completion of the course provided half of the credit of a GCSE examination. Local adults were also able to participate. An assistant teacher claimed the programme was a successful one, providing students with "a taste of a real working environment" and helping to build their confidence. However a Sunderland representative of the National Union of Teachers criticized the scheme as "a step too far".〔
